Errors: "Problem: QuickBooks cannot complete the reconfiguration process..." or "Please insert the disk: QuickBooks installation CD"

One of the following error messages occurs when reinstalling QuickBooks Desktop:

  • Please insert the disk: QuickBooks installation CD
  • Problem: QuickBooks cannot complete the reconfiguration process. This may be because there wasn't sufficient disk space available to install all the required files during installation. Solution: Insert the QuickBooks CD into the CD drive, and then click OK to run the installer and complete the reconfiguration process. If Auto Run is enabled on your computer, the QuickBooks Installation Wizard will begin automatically; click Cancel to exit that program. Alternatively, you can try to free up space on your computer. To do so, click Cancel to exit this program, free up 1.5 GB of space on your hard drive. Then reinstall QuickBooks from the CD.
Why this is happening

This error occurs if the installation is in repair mode and is looking for the repair tools. This most often occurs when a downloaded version of QuickBooks Desktop has been installed and you are reinstalling from a CD.

How to fix it

To resolve this error, uninstall QuickBooks Desktop and reinstall from the CD.

Note: Uninstalling QuickBooks Desktop does not remove your company data files.

  1. Uninstall your QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Reinstall your QuickBooks Desktop from the CD.
    • Insert the QuickBooks installation CD to get started. The installation wizard opens.
    • Follow the onscreen instruction from the installation wizard.
