Resolve errors when converting data or trying to open a company file

After converting data or trying to open a QuickBooks Point of Sale for Desktop company file, one of the following messages is received:

  • 181016 "Problem Could not open the QuickBooks Point of Sale data: [Company Name]."
  • 181021 "QuickBooks POS Message: 181021 "Problem Could not create company: [Company Name].
  • Errors: Could not connect to database or Could not load database
Why this is happening

This issue may be caused by one of the following:

  • The company name used on your network is not unique.
  • Two or more versions of QuickBooks Point of Sale for Desktop were installed on your computer.
  • You are not logged into Windows as an Administrator.
  • An issue with the QuickBooks Point of Sale for Desktop company data folder.
  • A firewall is blocking the ports that the QuickBooks Point of Sale for Desktop database manager is trying to access.
  • TCP/IP is not installed, is disabled, or is damaged.
How to fix it

To resolve this issue, follow these steps (attempting to convert data or open the company file after each numbered step):

Important:

  • Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements for QuickBooks Point of Sale for Desktop.
  • Ensure that you have no older versions of the software installed on your computer. If older versions are present, uninstall them using the Add or Remove Programs function in the Windows control panel.
  • Reboot your computer.
