When attempting to open a company file, restore or create a backup, or restore or create a portable file, the following message is displayed:
Permissions for your Windows user and/or QuickBooks Desktop are not setup correctly for the location of the company file, or permissions are incorrect for the location where you are saving/moving/backing up/copying the company file.
Note: Often, the file is located on a cd or a USB drive, and the user is attempting to open the company file while it resides on this media.
Copy the file to your desktop and then attempt to proceed with the action you were taking.
In addition to moving the company file to the desktop, ensure that you are saving/moving/backing up/copying the company file to the desktop, as well - ensuring that the file is not coming from or going to any location but the desktop.
After you have successfully completed the action you were taking, you can troubleshoot permissions for the location of the file or the location the file was going to. (Remember, in the case of a file that was on a cd or USB drive, it is recommended to always copy the file to a local drive like the Desktop, anyway.)
