Error: Internet Security levels were not set correctly or are set too high when opening QuickBooks

When you open QuickBooks Desktop, you see this error message:

The Internet security of the QuickBooks is set too high. Some of the online features of the QuickBooks might not work properly. Please change the security settings.

Why this is happening

Online features in QuickBooks are designed to run with the Internet Explorer security settings set to Medium. Settings other than Medium may result in pages not displaying or features failing to work.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends 2 solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try both to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Reset Internet Settings to default
Estimated time: 5 minutes

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu choose Internet Options.
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. Select the Internet icon.
  5. Click the Default Level button at bottom right to reset the level to Medium.
  6. Click the Local Intranet icon.
  7. Click the Default Level button at bottom right to reset the level to Medium.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close and reopen Internet Explorer.

Solution 2: Reset Internet Settings to default (Windows Server 2008 only)
Estimated time: 10 minutes

Windows Server 2008:

  1. Click the Windows Start button and select Server Manager.
  2. Click the Configure IE ESC link.
Important: You may need to find this link in the Server Summary window depending on your configuration and user permissions.
  3. Select Off for Administrators and Users and click Ok.
  4. Reopen QuickBooks. You should not see the error message.

If neither of the above options help resolve the issue, see the white paper from Microsoft Managing Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration to help editing Group Policy settings.
