Error -6209, 0: when updating Windows, installing QuickBooks, or trying to open a QuickBooks file

After updating Windows or installing QuickBooks Desktop and attempting to open a company file, the following error displays:

An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Intuit Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes: (-6209, 0).

Why this is happening

This issue is caused by a damaged Microsoft .NET Framework.

How to fix it

Important: Ensure that your QuickBooks Desktop is up to date before you perform the following steps. Intuit recommends two solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try both to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

NOTE:  If you do not use QuickBooks in Multi-User mode, you can turn off hosting to fix this error. (Often turning off hosting will get past this error>)
