Runtime Error in QBW32.exe after QuickBooks prompts you to move a company file

Opening a company file located in the Program Files directory, results in a prompt to move the company file from the Program Files folder to Company Files folder. When QuickBooks tries to move the company file, a Runtime Error mentioning QBW32.exe is displayed.

How to fix it

When QuickBooks Desktop assists you in moving your company files (either during installation or when you first open your company file), be sure to select a local destination drive. If the error persists, move the company file manually and open it from the new location.

Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to a non-Program Files folder.

  1. Open the folder that contains your QuickBooks file.
  2. Find the file with the .QBW extensions.
  3. Right-click the file then select Copy.
  4. Go to the folder where you want to save your QuickBooks file. Right-click the folder then select Paste.
Note: Intuit recommends to save your QuickBooks file into the default folder location "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files"
  5. Open QuickBooks and  then try to open your QuickBooks file from where you saved it.
