Unrecoverable error occurs when opening a QuickBooks Desktop file on a workstation

When attempting to open a company file on a workstation an unrecoverable error occurs and QuickBooks Desktop shuts down. This has been reported with the following error code:

00000 31530

Why this is happening

This can happen if the QBCF monitor service is running on a workstation that is not hosting the data file.

How to fix it

Important: Ensure QuickBooks Desktop is up to date. If you are running QuickBooks Desktop on a multi-user environment and you are using a server or dedicated machine for the storage of your company file, you have to make sure your server or main machine is hosting the company file and hosting is turned off on all of your work station.

End task on the QBCF monitoring service:

  1. Click the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys to open Windows Security.
  2. Select Task Manager.
  3. Click on the Processes tab.
  4. Click on the Image Name header to display the processes alphabetically.
  5. Scroll down and locate QBCFMonitorService.exe.
  6. Click once to highlight and then click the End Process button.
  7. Click Yes on the Task Manager Warning.

To prevent the QBCF Monitoring service from re-starting on the workstation:

  1. Select Start and then select Control Panel.
  2. Select Administrative Tools and then select Services.
  3. Scroll down in the list and locate QBCFMonitorService.
  4. Double click to open the QBCFMonitorService Properties window.
  5. Used the drop-down arrow in the Startup type field to select Disabled.
  6. Click Apply and then click OK.
  7. If this does not resolve the issue, repair QuickBooks Desktop.
