Error: Cannot connect with QuickBooks company file, when running payroll summary or report

When attempting to run one of the following reports, they are either not available or the option to select them is grayed out/unavailable:

  • Summarize Payroll Data in Excel
  • Client-Ready Payroll Report
  • Summarize Payroll Data in Excel
  • Tax Form Worksheets in Excel
  • Time and Costs in Excel
  • Client Ready Reports in Excel
     

This issue may also result in these error messages:

  • Error: Cannot connect with QuickBooks company file
  • Microsoft Excel didn't receive any new data from QuickBooks. Make sure payroll transactions exist within the selected range, then click Get QuickBooks Data to try again.
Why this is happening

The option to select the report is unavailable or grayed out may occur if:

  • QuickBooks Desktop does not have the latest updates installed.
  • QuickBooks Desktop installation files need to be re-activated.
  • QuickBooks Desktop installation is damaged.

 Error messages may occur if:

  • QuickBooks Desktop does not have the latest updates installed.
  • QuickBooks Desktop installation files need to be re-activated.
  • Macro levels in Excel are set too high.
  • QuickBooks Desktop installation is damaged.
How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.
