Message: Invalid number or EIN, or missing payroll features

  • Some payroll features are missing from the Employee menu.
  • You cannot create scheduled payroll or set up payroll.
  • You cannot process payroll forms and  "Entitlement is disabled, but Entitlement Unit is deactivated" may also appear.
  • The message "Invalid Number or EIN" displays when you try to activate your payroll service key.
Why this is happening

This issue is caused by a change in the payroll service features that earlier releases of QuickBooks do not recognize or the EIN may be deactivated in PSP.

How to fix it
  1. Update QuickBooks to the latest release.
  2. Get the latest release of your tax table.
  3. Check subscription status.
    1. Go to Employees > My Payroll Service > Manage Service Key.
    2. Verify the correct type of subscription is activated.
  4. If the incorrect type of subscription appears, click Remove to remove the existing subscription then add and activate the EIN.
