Online Banking Error OL-238 or OL-238a

When connecting to a Financial Institution (FI) to update an account in QuickBooks, error OL-238 or OL-238a occurs accompanied by one of the following messages:

  • QuickBooks was not able to complete your request at this time. Please try again later.
  • Your financial institution has rejected your request.

The latter message may be followed by additional details about the nature of the online session failure.

Why this is happening

These errors usually indicate that the FI's server is unavailable. The server may be offline for maintenance, busy due to a high volume of traffic or there may be an unexpected outage.

How to fix it
  1. Wait until later in the day or the following business day to connect with the FI and update the account. This is the best solution when the FI's server is not available. If the issue is not resolved, continue with step 2.
  2. Rebrand the FI information in QuickBooks.
