Unrecoverable Error: 20146 06636, 20145 97242, or msvcr80.dll error, when running rebuild

When running a rebuild in the latest version of QuickBooks Desktop Pro/Premier or Enterprise Solutions, QuickBooks Desktop crashes with one of the following errors:

  • QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report that you can send to us. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous. To see what data this error report contains, click here." When you click to see the data the information shows "Error signature AppName: qbw32.exe AppVer: 18.0.4001.606 ModName: msvcr80.dll
     
  • QuickBooks - Unrecoverable Error QuickBooks has experienced a problem and must be shut down. We apologize for the inconvenience. if you choose, you can report the error you have just experienced to the Intuit Product Development team to help us investigate and eliminate the problem. Please enter any additional information that might help resolve this error (for example, the steps you took to get to this point). Code 20146 06636

Why this is happening

These errors have been linked to damage in the data file that existed before it was converted to the latest version of QuickBooks Desktop.

How to fix it
  1. Click this link and follow steps to restore a backup for use with an earlier QuickBooks Desktop version.
  2. Prepare your file for updating.
  3. Close the company file in the previous version.
  4. Open the company file that has been rebuilt and update to the new version.
  5. Rebuild the company file in the new version of QuickBooks to ensure the error does not occur.
