Point of Sale Error: Fatal error during update installation, when installing an update

When you attempt to install a program update, you see the following error:

Fatal error during installation.
How to fix it
  1. Download the external patch update to Point of Sale.
  2. End all POS services and processes.
    1. Open Task Manager.
    2. Go to the Processes tab.
    3. Find and End the following processes:
      • qbpos.exe
      • QBPOSDBService.exe
      • QBPOSShell.exe
    4. Find and Stop the following service: QBPOS Database Manager vXX (XX as the version of POS)
      1. Press Window + R, the Search window appears.
      2. Enter services.msc
      3. In the Services window, search for QBPOS Database Manager vXX (XX as the version of POS)
      4. Stop the service.
      5. Close the services window.
  3. Delete the contents of the update folder:
    1. Right-click the Windows Start button and choose Open Windows Explorer (Windows XP: choose Explore).
    2. Navigate in the left window to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\QuickBooks Point of Sale XX\Update (where XX is the highest number version you see).
    3. Right-click a file in this folder, select Delete and confirm the deletion. Repeat until the Update folder is empty.
  4. Close the explorer window and update Point of Sale using the file you downloaded in step 1.

If the issue persists:

  1. Restart the computer in the Selective Startup mode and update Point of Sale using the external update file.
  2. Uninstall and reinstall Point of Sale and then update Point of Sale using the external update file.
