Status code 5 or System Error. Code: 5 Access Denied

When opening Point of Sale, installing hardware, or running other functions in Point of Sale, you see one of the following errors:

  • Status code 5
  • System Error. Code: 5 Access Denied
Why this is happening
  • The Windows user you are logged in as does not have adequate rights to Windows.
  • Your Point of Sale update's Shared Download location is invalid.
  • A Vista response relating to User Account Control.
How to fix it
  1. Ensure QuickBooks Point of Sale for Desktop is updated to the latest release.
  2. Turn off User Account Control (UAC).
  3. Open QuickBooks Point of Sale for Desktop and perform the function that was returning the error code. It should not recur.

IMPORTANT: After opening Point of Sale and completing the error causing process, you need to turn UAC back on and not have further issues. UAC needs to be turned on for financial exchange to function with QuickBooks.
