When you try to open the QuickBooks Business Planner, you see the following error:

Application-defined or object-defined error. Could not start QuickBooks. 80040408

Why this is happening

This error occurs if QuickBooks Desktop is installed on a Windows 7 or Windows Vista operating system and the User Account Control (UAC) feature is turned off.

The UAC must be turned on for all QuickBooks Desktop integrated applications and for any third-party applications that use the QuickBooks Desktop Software Developers Kit (SDK). Integrated applications include:

  • Business Planner.
  • QuickBooks Statement Writer.
  • Fixed Asset Manager.
  • ODBC driver for custom reports.
How to fix it

To turn on User Account Control (UAC):

  1. Click the Windows (Start) button and click Control Panel.
  2. Click User Accounts, then select User Accounts again.
  3. Click the link labeled Turn User Account Control on or off.
  4. Put a checkmark in the box labeled Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer and click OK.
  5. Restart your computer to apply the changes.
  6. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open the Business Planner
