Red X or problems with ActiveX controls when trying to use Web Restore for Online Backup

QuickBooks Online Backup is experiencing problems with ActiveX controls when trying to use Web Restore, such as displaying a large red X instead of the directory tree.

Why this is happening

The default settings of the browser are preventing ActiveX controls from loading automatically.

How to fix it

To resolve this issue you must set up QuickBooks Online Backup websites as Trusted Sites to allow access:

  1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer
  2. Select the Tools menu, and then Internet Options
  3. Select the Security tab, click on the Trusted Sites icon, and then click the Sites... button
  4. Uncheck the box, "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone"
  5. Add the following website: https://secure10.backup.com
  6. Click OK to close the Trusted Sites window
  7. Now click the Custom Level button and confirm that any items related to ActiveX controls is set to either Enabled or Prompt.
  8. Click OK to close the Security Settings window, and OK again to close the Internet Options window.

If Web Restore has been loaded previously and is now experiencing issues, remove the ActiveX control. Online Backup will prompt to reload the control the next time you log in to use the Web Restore function.

Remove the Active X control used to restore Online Backup files:

For Internet Explorer 6.0

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options
  3. Click the Settings button in the Temporary Internet files section
  4. Click View Objects in the Temporary Internet files folder section
  5. Find the program file labeled "WRXCTL Class", right-click the file name, and then choose RemoveImportant: Do NOT remove any other controls from this screen. Removing other controls can impact how Internet Explorer works with other plugins.
  6. Click Yes if warning message appears
  7. Close and reopen Internet Explorer
  8. Click the yellow bar, and select Install ActiveX Control..., and then select Retry to reenable the ActiveX component removed in step 5. Note: If a security warning appears, choose Install to continue installing the Active X control.

Note: Internet Explorer 6.0 is not compatible with QuickBooks 2013

For Internet Explorer 7.0

  1. Click on Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet>Internet Options
  2. On the General tab, under Browsing History, click Settings
  3. Click the View Objects button
  4. Find the program file labeled "WRXCTL Class", right-click the file name, and then choose RemoveImportant: Do NOT remove any other controls from this screen. Removing other controls can impact how Internet Explorer works with other plugins.
  5. Click Yes if warning message appears
  6. Close and reopen Internet Explorer
  7. Click the yellow bar, and select Install ActiveX Control..., and then select Retry to reenable the ActiveX component removed in step 4. Note: If a security warning appears, choose Install to continue installing the Active X control.

After completing the steps above, try using Web Restore again to restore the selected files.
