QuickBooks was unable to back up the company file

When you try to create a backup, you see one of the following errors or QuickBooks Desktop shuts down without error:

  • QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file.
  • Backup failed.
Why this is happening

This error may occur if:

  • The company file name exceeds 65 characters.
  • You are trying to save a backup to an external drive or flash drive.
  • The company file is larger than 3 GB.
  • The QuickBooks Desktop application is being scanned or used by another program in the background.
  • The path to the company file is too long.
  • The file name contains a .ADR extension.
How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try them all to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown
