Error when printing: The file you specified cannot be opened

When attempting to print transactions, the following message appears:

The file you specified cannot be opened. Make sure that it is not currently being used by another program or a read-only file. The Windows error is: 'The file exists.'
Why this is happening

This error can occur if the file attribute for the qbprint.qbp file has been changed to Read-only (or another attribute other than Archive).

How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Manually change the properties of the qbprint.qbp file

  1. Search your hard drive for the qbprint.qbp file.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Archive and attributes area, make sure that the File is ready for Archiving box is checked.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Print your transaction in QuickBooks.

Solution 2: Rename the qbprint.qbp file

If the preceding steps don't resolve the issue, follow the steps in Rename the Qbprint.qbp file.
