Error 16026 when downloading a program or a payroll update

When attempting to download a program or update, you see this message:

Error 16026

Why this is happening

This error can occur if:

  • You are having issues connecting to the Internet.
  • Your version of Microsoft Internet Explorer is not 6.0 or later.
  • Internet Explorer's cipher strength is not 128-bit.
  • Some QuickBooks Desktop files were not installed correctly, or are damaged.
  • You are running an unsupported version of QuickBooks Desktop on Microsoft Windows.
How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

  • QuickBooks Desktop is supported on Microsoft Windows 7.
  • QuickBooks Desktop 2014 R4 & later are supported on Microsoft Windows 8.
  • QuickBooks 2016 R7 and later are supported on Microsoft Windows 10.
