Error PS058 appears when downloading a payroll update

This error occurs when attempting to download and install payroll updates.

Why this is happening

Error PS058 is a generic error in that it is not caused by a single issue. To understand what is causing this it helps to first have an understanding of the payroll updated installation process.

The installation process occurs in several stages: copying the files to the hard drive, decrypting the files, and then installing them. The copy portion is handled by the QuickBooks QBDAgent which copies the encrypted files to the hard drive. Once located on the hard drive, Microsoft Internet Explorer decrypts the files. Following the decryption, the QBDAgent installs the files to the QuickBooks program directory for use. The failure of any of these stages to complete successfully may lead to this error.

Note: This issue may be caused by a misconfigured firewall. If you have a firewall in place, please refer to Firewall and Internet security settings for updates and network access.

How to fix it

Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest maintenance release:

  1. Go to Help > Update QuickBooks.
  2. Click on the Update Now button, then Get Updates.
  3. Close and reopen QuickBooks. 
  4. Install payroll updates.
    1. Go to Employees > Get payroll updates.
    2. Click Update.

Check for errors in the company file using the QuickBooks log file:

  1. While in QuickBooks, press F2 on your keyboard (or Ctrl+1).
  2. While in the Product Information screen, click on F3 on your keyboard.
  3. While in the Tech Help window, click the Open File tab.
  4. Double-click QBWin.log to open the log file.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of this text document (this file might be long), and look for a line that has the word Error in it.
  6. Once the error code has been identified, search the QuickBooks Knowledge Base (found on QuickBook's Support Site) for an article pertaining to your specific error code.
    • As an example Error 15218, the most commonly found error, has a specific article.

If your error can not be found:

  1. Exit QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Use the Windows Task Manager to close QuickBooks processes, including the Update process.
  3. Run the Reboot.bat utility.
  4. Restart the computer.
    • Note: You may need to print these instructions or bookmark this article before proceeding.
  5. Re-open QuickBooks and try installing your Payroll Update again.
  6. If all else fails, repair QuickBooks Desktop.
  7. If the repair does not fix the error, uninstall and reinstall QuickBooks in a new directory.
