Company file you selected cannot be found

The following message appears when selecting a company file in QuickBooks Desktop after upgrading to Windows 8, 7 or Vista:

The company file you selected cannot be found.
Why this is happening

When Windows 10/8/7 and  Vista is installed over an earlier version of Windows, it moves the files from the Documents and Settings folder to the Users folder.

The path to the QuickBooks Desktop company file becomes:

C:\Users\Username\My Documents

However, the path should be:


Note: This only happens if your QuickBooks Desktop file is saved on the default folder location.

How to fix it

Open QuickBooks Desktop file from default folder

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop and go to File and select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select  Open a company file (.QBW or .QBA) option and click Next. The Open a Company window opens.
  3. Browse the default location of your QuickBooks  Desktop file.
    • Normally the default location is C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files
  4. Locate and open your QuickBooks Desktop file.

Remove old file from the list

  1. Go to the home page of your QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. In the No Company Open window, click Edit List.
  3. Select to hide the old file then click OK.
