When opening QuickBooks Customer Manager or Client Manager, one of these errors occurs:

  • Unable to open database
  • Customer Manager was unable to load the database. System.application exception: internal database error: transaction rolled back while opening database connection
  • System.application exception: Specified database is invalid (while opening database connection)
  • Customer Manager is unable to load the database, and will now exit. Error code: System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for "iAnywhere.Data.AsaClient.AsaConnection" threw an exception. --> System.IO.FileNotFoundException: File dbdata8.dll was not found

Why this is happening

These errors can occur when:

  • Database Server is running.
  • A transaction log is open.
  • The database file is located on a server.
  • The dbdata8.dll file is missing or damaged.
  • A custom field imported from QuickBooks or a comma-separated values file (.csv file extension) contains an equals sign (=).
  • A Customer Manager 2.5 database file is being opened with Customer Manager 2.0.

How to fix it

Select the best option for your situation:

  • Database Server is still running

Select one of the following options:

  • Restart the computer OR
  • Open the Windows Task Manager and end the QBDBMGR.EXE process:
    1. Right-click the Windows taskbar and select Task Manager.
    2. Click the Processes tab.
    3. Click the Image Name column heading to sort the list of processes alphabetically.
    4. Select QBDBMGR.EXE in the Image Name column.
    5. Click End Process.
    6. Click Yes to the message, "WARNING: Terminating a process can cause undesired results including loss of data and system instability...."
  • A transaction log is open
  1. Close Customer Manager or Client Manager if it is open.
  2. Right-click the Windows Start button and select Explore.
  3. Browse to the folder where the Customer Manager or Client Manager database is stored. Search your hard drive for .qcm files if you don't know where those files are stored.
  4. Right-click the (Database name).log file and select Rename, where (Database name) is the name of the database file.
  5. Enter (Database name).old and press Enter.
  6. Open Customer Manager.
  • The dbdata8.dll file is missing or damaged

IMPORTANT: To use this solution, you MUST have the original CD with the Customer Manager application (for use when you re-install in the last step).  Customer Manager is no longer sold or supported, so installation files and updates are no longer available online.

  1. Refer to Uninstall QuickBooks Customer/Client Manager to uninstall the application.
  2. (Customer Manager 2.0 or Client Manager 2.0 only) Rename the DatabaseServer folder:
    1. Right-click the Windows Start button and select Explore.
    2. Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit.
    3. Right-click the DatabaseServer folder and select Rename.
    4. Enter DatabaseServerOLD and press Enter.
  3. Reinstall the application.
  • The database file is located on a server
  1. Copy the database from the network location to a folder on the local hard drive.
  2. Open the Customer Manager database.
  • A custom field imported from QuickBooks or a comma-separated values file (.csv file extension) contains an equals sign (=)
  1. Select the File menu and select Utilities > Undo last import/sync.
  2. Select the option that best fits your situation:
    • Edit the custom field in QuickBooks to remove the equal sign.
    • Edit the .csv file to remove the equal sign.
  3. Synchronize with QuickBooks or import the .csv file.
  • A Customer Manager 2.5 database file is being opened with Customer Manager 2.0
  1. Select the Help menu and select About.
  2. Verify the information in the Release Number field.
    • If the release number contains v2, open or install Customer Manager 2.5 to open the database.
    • If the release number contains v2.5, select a different option from the list above to resolve the issue.

While live phone support has been discontinued for Customer Manager, you have many ways to get support. Search articles on this site, or read discussions or post questions on the Intuit QuickBooks Community site for free.
