File specified cannot be opened. Unable to create a backup file when backing up a Mac file

When attempting to back up a QuickBooks company file, this error message appears:

Warning: The file you specified cannot be opened. Make sure that it is not currently being used by another program or a read-only file.
Unable to create a backup file. Your data has NOT been backed up.
Reasons behind this error

This specific error has two main possible causes:

  • The name of the backup file contains special characters such as forward or backward slashes.
  • The file is being backed up to a network mountable image.

 

How to fix the error

Two reminders and resolutions to take note of and apply as resolution:

  1. Do not attach any non-alphanumeric characters (symbols such as @#$%) to the name of the backup file.
     
  2. Back up your file to an actual folder on the network.
    It is NOT advisable to just back up your file on a mountable image created when you connect with another computer on the network.
     
    Important: In order for the company file to be properly saved and easily located, the program needs to know the exact location of the designated folder on the network.

    Click the drop-down arrow located next to the file name to select a folder on that network drive where you want to save and/or back up your file.
