Error: -6073, -99001. QuickBooks is unable to open this company file

The following error occurs when attempting to open the company file:


Why this is happening

This error may occur for one of the following reasons:

  • The file is open in Single User mode on the machine hosting the file.
  • The file is still being accessed by another workstation and is in Single User mode.
  • The file is located in a read-only network folder.
  • The files are hosted on a Linux server and are using more than one set of login credentials to sign on to the shared folder.
  • The file was being accessed by remote software (LogMeIn, GoToMyPc, etc.) and the host computer still sees that user as actively logged on.
How to fix it

Errors that occur while setting up or working in Multi-User mode can be time-consuming to diagnose and correct. To help investigate and resolve the error, we recommend using the QuickBooks File Doctor, which analyzes whether your computer and network connection are set up properly for Multi-User mode.

Solution: Download, install and run the QuickBooks File Doctor.  It is designed to troubleshoot networking and multi-user errors that can occur when you open a company file.

If the company data file is open in Single User mode on another workstation:

  1.  Have all workstations close out of QuickBooks completely.
  2. Open QuickBooks on host computer.
  3. Open file and switch to Multi-User mode.
  4. If this does not work, have all workstations reboot.
