Windows installer opens when starting QuickBooks Desktop

The Microsoft Installer launches when trying to open QuickBooks Dekstop.

Why this is happening

This issue can occur when:

  • QuickBooks files have not been registered in the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) registry
  • The .Net Framework has become corrupted
  • Damaged Windows user
  • QuickBooks Product Listing Service is damaged
  • Your computer's antivirus may be preventing part of QuickBooks from installing
How to fix it

Solution 1: Re- register QuickBooks Desktop files

  1. Cancel the Microsoft Installer.
  2. Exit QuickBooks.
  3. Search for the file reboot.bat and, when located, double-click the file.

    Note: Depending on whether your Windows Folder Options are set to show or hide known file extensions, the file may display as reboot.bat or reboot. If you have multiple installations of various version of QuickBooks, you may have multiple copies of the reboot.bat file. If this is the case, select the copy of the file that is located in the folder specific to the version of QuickBooks with which you are experiencing this issue.
     
  4. The C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe window displays as the files are registered.
  5. Allow the process to finish and then start QuickBooks.

 

Solution 2: Run the QuickBooks Component Repair Tool

 

Solution 3: Temporarily disable your antivirus program and repair QuickBooks Desktop

Because there are many different antivirus programs available, we are unable to provide exact steps on how to disable all of them. Please consult your antivirus help articles or support site.

Once the antivirus has been disabled, repair QuickBooks

 

Solution 4: Create a new Windows user

Consult your system administrator or IT professional for assistance.

 

If the provided steps do not resolve the issue perform a clean install.
