Error: The Company file cannot be closed at this time as...another application...is using it

You see the following message when QuickBooks Desktop stops responding or when you are attempting to open a company file:

The Company file cannot be closed at this time as there is another application ... which is using it.

Note: The Payroll QBCOM Adapter or another third-party application like FLEXquarters QOBDC could be listed in the error.

Why this is happening

An add-in, add-on, or other background process is accessing QuickBooks Desktop.

How to fix it

To resolve this issue:

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop:
    1. Right-click the Microsoft Windows taskbar and select Task Manager.
    2. Click the Processes tab and select QBW32.EXE.
    3. Click End Process and click Yes to the warning message.

    Note: If FLEXquarters QODBC was listed in the error message, update the ODBC driver to the latest version. This issue has been associated with versions of the ODBC driver up to and including

  2. Hold Ctrl key and double-click the QuickBooks icon to open program.
  3. If this does not resolve the issue, restart the computer (please be aware of other users that might be connected to your computer if you decide to reboot).

Note: If you are in Selective Startup, return to Normal Startup. Also consult an IT professional if you unfamiliar with Selective Startup and its effects on your computer.

If the error persists, please follow these steps:

  1. Exit QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Perform a search for the file Reboot.bat.
  3. When the file is located, double-click it. A DOS window will open and after several moments will close. Do not attempt to close this window manually.
  4. Restart your computer, and then restart QuickBooks.
  5. If the error still occurs, try to repair your existing QuickBooks installation.
  6. If the message persists, uninstall QuickBooks through the Add or Remove Programs window and then uninstall and reinstall QuickBooks.
