Errors when you upgrade your company data file to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop

An update of your company data file, from an older version to a newer version, fails. Possible error messages include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Error: C=328
  • Error: C=330
  • Error: C=422 followed by: An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to open the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Technical support (-1,0) or (-14114, 0).
  • Error (-14102, 0) or Error (-14108, 0)

Most data conversion issues are caused by pre-existing damage in the data file. When QuickBooks Desktop tries to convert this damaged data, the program encounters problems and the file cannot be converted.

If your company file (or backup) is located on a computer that does not have the new version of QuickBooks Desktop installed, you must copy the file to a computer where the new version is installed. Do not update a company file across a network connection as it may damage your file.

Restoring a backup (.qbb) or a portable company file (.qbm)

If you restore a portable company file (.qbm) or a backup (.qbb) to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop, you may see this error:

  • (-6032, -195)

This error may occur if:

  • The original .qbw data file from which the portable company file (.qbm) or a backup (.qbb) was made from is damaged.
  • A backup for QuickBooks for Mac created in QuickBooks for Windows is being restored in QuickBooks for Windows.
How to fix it

Important: Please ensure QuickBooks Desktop is up to date before performing the following steps.

  1. Open the older version of QuickBooks Desktop.
Note: If the newer version of QuickBooks Desktop overwrote the older version, uninstall both versions, and then reinstall them to separate folders. This enables you to work in both versions on the same computer.
  2. Restore the backup that was made during the update process. If necessary, refer to the QuickBooks Help for instructions on how to restore a backup in your version
Note: Do not overwrite the original company file during this step. If the message "filename already exists" appears, modify the file name to make it unique.
  3. Prepare your data file for updating to a new version.
  4. Start the newer version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  5. Open your data file in the new version and follow the process to update your company data file.
