QuickBooks Desktop Critical Fixes updates (ULIP)

What are Critical Fixes (aka ULIP)?

ULIP (Ultra Light Patch) is a new feature in QuickBooks 2014 and later where minor critical fixes can be delivered without the need for an actual release patch. The patch release process will continue as is (R releases such as 2014 R3). The benefit of these is that we can deliver fixes sooner rather than waiting for the scheduled release patch.

Detailed information on ULIP

How to apply the Critical Fixes (ULIP):

  1. Inside of QuickBooks, go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks.
  2. Click on the Update Now tab.
  3. Scroll down and make sure Critical Fixes is selected (you should not be able to uncheck it, but just to be sure make sure it is selected).
  4. Click Get Updates.
  5. When the update is complete, close the Update QuickBooks window, then close the program.
  6. Reboot your computer. This step is important to ensure proper installation of the Critical Fixes.
  7. Once your computer is restarted, re-open the program.
    • Important: Double-check the critical fixes have been applied by going back to Help- Update QuickBooks- Update Now and ensuring that Critical Fixes says New Files Installed.

Alternate way to check to make sure the Critical Fix(s) (ULIP) have been applied correctly:

  1. Navigate to the following location (default installation directory):
    • 64bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR\CriticalFixes
    • 32bit Windows: C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR\CriticalFixes

  2. To confirm that the Critical Fix has been applied successfully:
    • If you see a .DLL file (or DLL files) in the Critical Fixes folder, than the Critical Fix was applied successfully. You should not see a force_apply_ulip.dat file.
    • If you do see a Force_apply_ulip.dat file, than the Critical Fix did not apply successfully and you may need to repeat the steps above to confirm the patch is applied correctly.
