QuickBooks File Manager (QFM) batch upgrade via network

QuickBooks does not recommend attempting to upgrade files over a network due to possibility of data corruption and errors caused by network latency.

Detailed Information

It is best to install the database network server on the file server. This doesn’t require any QuickBooks license and it is available as part of the QuickBooks installer. This will also speed up the upgrade process.

Upgrading QBW files from the local machine is the safest and fastest approach. However, if upgrading locally or installing the File Manager on the server doesn't work for you, and you have already setup QFM with the file paths, passwords etc… copying those files to the local machine and running batch upgrade will require you to reset the file paths and passwords. This is because all files are indexed by file path whether it’s local or on the network.
Below are the alternative solution if you have setup your network files using mapped drives.
  1. Copy the files to the local machine
  2. Disconnect the mapped drive
  3. Create a mapped drive to the local folder using the same drive letter.
  4. Run batch upgrade
With this approach QFM will still use the mapped path for the file and you can upgrade your files. Once you are done, you can copy the files over to the network location and remap the network drive with the original drive letter.
