Update of QuickBooks Database Server Manager

 The QuickBooks Database Server Manager is a program that manages the access to content stored on a server, specifically when the full program is only installed on the individual workstations.  This program is included as part of all QuickBooks Desktop software.

Detailed information
Periodically, it may be necessary to update the Database Server Manager.  Generally, it is necessary when a new year of QuickBooks Desktop is installed on the workstations OR if a critical update to a current year is released.
 
 
NOTE: Some users install the Database Server Manager for Enterprise Solutions on their server because it has a larger cache size which works better with larger files. This database server manager will work fine with Premier or Pro data files. If this is the case, then the patch for Enterprise Solutions must be downloaded and installed even if the data files were created in the Premier or Pro versions.
 
Update instructions
To update to a newer year of QuickBooks Desktop:
  1. Start the Installation Wizard.

From a CD: Insert the QuickBooks CD into the CD or DVD drive.  If the install does not start automatically: 

    1. Right-click the Windows Start button and choose Explore.
    2. Browse to your CD or DVD drive in the left pane of the window and click once to view the contents of the CD.
    3. In the right pane of the window, double-click the Setup.exe file to begin the installation.

From a download: Double-click the downloaded installation file (.exe extension).

Note: If you don't already have the file, you can download it here.

  1. Click Yes to All when prompted to overwrite the existing files when the installer extracts the files.
  2. Click Next to begin the installation.
  3. Read the Software License Agreement. If you agree, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and click Next.
  4. When asked to select the type of installation for this computer, choose Custom & Network Options.
  5. When asked to set options for this computer, select I will NOT be using QuickBooks on this computer. I will be storing our company file here so it can be shared over network. (A license is not required for this option.) 
  6. Click Next.
  7. You will be advised when the installation is complete.
 
To update a critical release (patch): 
  1. Download the patch from http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/Support/ProductUpdates.aspx.  (Note:  The patch for the server is the same as the patch for the workstation.)
  2. Reboot the server after the patch installation completes.  (This is strongly recommended).
  3. On the workstation, after the server has been updated, you may get the following message:

The company file needs to be updated to work with this version of QuickBooks Desktop.

  1.  There will be a prompt to create a backup which is required since these updates can modify the database structure.
  2.  Follow the prompts and after backup is completed, you should be able to open the file.
