(Built-in) File Doctor for QuickBooks 2014 R5 and above

Use the built-in File Doctor for QuickBooks 2014 R5 and later


The QuickBooks File Doctor has been integrated into QuickBooks 2014 R5 and later.  This is called the Internal QuickBooks File Doctor (built into QuickBooks 2015 R4 and above). 

Important:  For H202 errors (networking), please use the external version of the QuickBooks File Doctor.


    • If you are receiving an error opening your company file in Multi-User Mode over the network such as error H202, H303, H101, or H505, please follow the steps in the Error H101, H202, H303, or H505: when opening your company file article to resolve.
    • If you are having problems with the program (QuickBooks not opening, unable to install, etc) you should first run the QuickBooks Component Repair Tool to rule out program or Windows issues.
    • If you suspect data damage which is preventing your company file from opening or receiving a 6000 series error message when opening your file, you will need to run the Internal QuickBooks File Doctor below.
Detailed instructions

Some types of errors in QuickBooks will automatically trigger the Internal QuickBooks File Doctor. In these cases, you will see a blue Start button. Simply click the Start button and it will automatically invoke the Internal QuickBooks File Doctor. When this happens, start at Step 4 below.

  1. You will need to be logged in as a user with Administrator rights to Windows in order to to run the Internal File Doctor.
  2. Open QuickBooks to the No Company Open screen (if you are already your company file, you will need to go to File- Close Company).
  3. While on the No Company Open screen, go to the File menu and choose Utilities, then Repair File and Network Problems.
  4. (Start here if you were prompted to run File Doctor when opening your file) You will see a menu pop up, click OK as QuickBooks File Doctor will re-launch with Admin Rights.
  5. Click Yes to the Windows UAC prompt.
  6. You will need to click the green wrench icon in your taskbar to open the Internal File Doctor.
  7. Click Continue on the track diagnostic information window.
  8. When prompted to login to your company file, enter the Admin Username and Password, then click Next.
    • The internal File Doctor will then start trying to repair your file.  Please wait until prompted with the next steps.
  9. Choose your Advanced Settings, and make sure File Diagnosis only is selected.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Once the diagnosis is complete, re-open your file again and see if the issue is resolved.

Important: If the issue is not resolved or you are prompted to run the internal File Doctor again when opening your file, you will need to contact QuickBooks Technical Support. You will need to pick Fix an Error, then View Support Options to view the contact phone number for support.
