Resolve network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor test results

The QuickBooks File Doctor can test your network and help resolve netowork problems that affect QuickBooks. Each of the tests are described in the table below, including resources to help fix problems in each area.

Result Description Resolution
Hosting Mode is Off.

Accessing QuickBooks files over a network requires QuickBooks Hosting turned on.

Important: (Ignore this warning if you are on the workstation computer).

Turn on hosting. (Only turn Hosting ON if you are on the server computer. Do not turn hosting ON if you are on a workstation).
Folder containing company file is not writable. Check for read/write access to the folder the company file is in. Configure access permissions in Windows for your Windows user and QuickBooks.
Folder containing company file is not shared.

The folder containing the company file must be shared to other users.

Important: (Ignore this warning if you are on the workstation computer).

Share the folder in Windows.
No network connectivity At least one working TCP/IP adapter and that the hostname of the local machine is resolvable.
  • Run IPConfig from a command line and ensure that you have an IP address for at least one network adapter. Check that you are able to run your web browser and open up any internet/intranet web page.
  • If you have more than one adapter, only one needs to have an IP address.
Network problem: IP reverse lookup has failed. Check if Windows can produce an IP address from a hostname and reverse the process.
  • Check to see if your firewall is blocking DNS requests.
  • Check to see if your DNS service is setup correctly.
  • Check to see if there are any duplicate IP addresses on your network.
QBCFMonitorService not running.

Determine if the QuickBooks PortFinder service in Windows is responsive.

Important: (Ignore this warning if you are on the workstation computer).

QBDBMgrN not running.

Check if the Sybase Database Service is reachable and responsive.
Note: The Sybase Database service works directly with QuickBooks.

[Firewall software] is Active may be blocking QuickBooks Check if firewall sofware is enabled. If so, check if it's configured to work with QuickBooks. If any third-party firewall is detected, then it is listed here. Configure firewall exceptions for QuickBooks.

Run IPConfig

You may find the IPConfig tool useful in verifying the TCP/IP configuration of your computer. This often helps to troubleshoot problems using QuickBooks on a network.

The most common IPConfig commands are:

Command: Description:
ipconfig basic TCP/IP information
ipconfig /all detailed TCP/IP information
ipconfig /renew Renew the IPv4 address for all network adapters
ipconfig /release Release the IPv4 address for all network adapters

The ipconfig command is available in each version of windows:

  • Windows 7 and Vista: 
    1. Click the Windows Start button
    2. In the search field, enter Command Prompt.
    3. In the list of results, click Command Prompt.
    4. At the command prompt, enter ipconfig and press Enter.
  • Windows XP
    1. Click the Windows Start button.
    2. Choose Run.
    3. Enter cmd and press Enter.

Configure your firewall

You may encounter errors if your firewall blocks Internet access needed for specific QuickBooks programs or files. Updating your firewall to the latest release may resolve the issue or you may need to manually configure your firewall software.
