Networking and File Sharing for Windows 7 with Windows Vista

This article explains how to enable networking for Windows 7 machines with Vista machines. This article also has tips on how to handle file sharing.

Solution Description
In Windows 7, a Workgroup (same name as Vista machines) needs to be created rather than a homegroup. Homegroup is only for Windows 7 machines.
To share files do the following:

For Windows Vista:

  1. On the Windows 7 machine go into Control Panel \ All Control Panel Items \ Network and Sharing Center then click on Change advanced sharing settings.
2. In order to share files from the Windows 7 to a Vista machine, in advanced sharing options, change the encryption from 128-bit to 64-bit. (If the Windows 7 machine is acting as the server)
  3. Also in Advanced Sharing Settings you'll want to choose if you want any users to have access to the public shares and turn off password protection.
  4. If you want to keep password protection enabled make sure there is a log in account for the Vista machine(s) and they have a password.
