Switch between banking modes in QuickBooks Desktop

QuickBooks online banking lets you match transactions using an Express Mode (Side-by-side in QuickBooks 2013) that is more of a graphical interface, or a more classic view called Register Mode.

Detailed Instructions

There are two Bank Feeds modes available in QuickBooks Desktop. How transactions are displayed (and handled) in the bank feeds depends on the selected mode.

  • Renaming rules created in Express Mode (Side-by-side) are NOT available in Register mode, and aliases created in Register mode are not available in Express (Side-by-side) mode.
  • You can switch between the two modes as often as needed or as required for troubleshooting.

To switch between Bank Feeds modes:

  1. Ensure your QuickBooks Desktop is updated to the latest release.
  2. Ensure you are in single-user mode.
  3. From the Edit menu, go to Preferences.
  4. In the left pane, choose Checking then click the Company Preferences tab.
  5. In the Bank Feeds section, select the mode you want to use.

    • Express mode – available in QuickBooks Desktop 2014 and later. In this mode, you use the Transactions List window to add or match transactions. Renaming rules are created automatically and they are more flexible than with Classic Mode. To go to the downloaded transactions list, click the Transaction List button. Note that if there are no downloaded transactions ready for adding and matching, you will see Download Transactions button instead.

    • Classic Mode – this mode uses the account register to add or match transactions. Aliases match names exactly and you control when aliases are created. To access the transactions and start adding and matching them, click the View button.

  6. Click Ok.
