Change QuickBooks Desktop product number and/or license number without uninstall or reinstall

You may need to change the license and/or product number of QuickBooks Desktop for one of the following reasons:

  • It was installed with the wrong license number and / or product code
  • The amount of users are inaccurate, this can be due to using the single user license for installation instead of the correct Multi-User license. Once the license and product information in QuickBooks is accurate, the number of users will also be accurate.

QuickBooks Desktop for Windows

QuickBooks Desktop (change the license number only):

  1. From the Help menu, Manage My License and click Change My License Number.
  2. Enter the new license number and click Next and Finish.
  3. Restart the Computer.
  4. Be reminded:
    • If you do not restart the computer, The program will still deliver the incorrect license number to the server when you access the company file. If you are using multi user mode networked with multiple seats, QuickBooks will give you the error "You've exceeded the maximum number of users who can access the company file at one time."
    • To avoid uninstalling and reinstalling the product, you must edit the qbregistration.dat file. Any typos or incorrect information saved in the qbregistration.dat file will prevent QuickBooks from opening properly after the edit. Please see steps to edit the qbregistration.dat file.

QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
  2. Select the QuickBooks menu option at the top left.
  3. Select Manage My License from the drop down menu.
  4. Select Deauthorize this computer.
  5. QuickBooks will prompt for a new license and product number.
  6. Enter the new information.
