Change settings to increase printing speed

Selecting various settings for your printer or for the document you are printing can increase the speed of printing.

Important: The printer settings included below are general and may vary depending on your printer. Please check your printer documentation or contact your printer manufacturer's technical support if you need further assistance on changing printer settings.

Detailed instructions
  • Spooling. Make sure spooling is activated:
    1. From the Microsoft (R) Windows (R) Start menu, select Settings and then Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Printers and Faxes.
    3. Right-click the icon for the printer you are using, and then select Properties.
    4. Click the Advanced tab.
    5. Click Spool print documents so program finishes printing faster. (Wording may vary with your version of Windows.)
    6. Click OK.

  • Resolution/print quality. Lowering the resolution reduces print quality, which results in faster printing at the expense of the print quality. (If you choose this method to speed printing, print a sample to see whether the quality is acceptable.) To reduce the resolution in QuickBooks:
    1. From the QuickBooks File menu, select Printer Setup.
    2. Click the Options button next to the printer window
    3. Under Print Quality on the Finishing tab, select an option other than high quality.
    4. Click OK, and then click OK in the Printer setup window.

  • Number of fonts. A form or report may print slowly if you have included many fonts. To improve printing speed, customize the fonts on QuickBooks reports and the fonts on QuickBooks forms to include just one or two fonts.

  • Font settings. Bitmap fonts generally take longer to generate and print. To clear the bitmap fonts option in QuickBooks:
    1. From the QuickBooks File menu, select Printer Setup.
    2. Click the Options button.
    3. On the Finishing tab, click the Details button.
    4. Under Font Settings, clear the Send TrueType as Bitmaps checkbox.
    5. Click OK, click OK again in the Properties window, and then click OK again in the Printer setup window.

  • Dithering. Setting dithering to "none" will sometimes increase print speed. See your printer documentation for details of dithering options.

  • Graphics rendering mode. Vector graphics generally print faster than raster graphics because less data is sent to the printer. To change this setting in QuickBooks:
    1. From the QuickBooks File menu, select Printer Setup.
    2. Click the Options button.
    3. On the Finishing tab, click the Details button.
    4. Under Rendering Mode, select the Send Graphics as Vector option.
    5. Click OK, click OK again in the Properties window, and then click OK in the Printer setup window.
Note: Adobe (R) PostScript (R) printing is slower, because more data is sent to the printer.
