Upgrade (convert) your QuickBooks for Mac company file to a new version

After installing a new version of QuickBooks for Mac, prepare your data file for conversion, and then upgrade it by opening it in the new version of QuickBooks for Mac.

Detailed instructions

To prepare your company data file and update it to a new version of QuickBooks for Mac:

  1. Prepare the data file for conversion in the previously installed version of QuickBooks for Mac:
    1. Check for any special (non-alphanumeric) characters in the company file name and rename the file if any are found.
    2. Run the Custom Transaction Detail Report, enable the Memo column in that report, and change the date range to All.
      1. Check for any memos containing more than 50 characters or special characters.
      2. If found, edit those transactions and shorten the memo or remove the special (non-alphanumeric) characters.
    3. Run the Rebuild utility, backing up the data file when prompted and taking care not to overwrite any existing backups.
    4. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Convert (upgrade) the data file in the new version of QuickBooks for Mac:
    1. Open QuickBooks and open the company data file.
    2. Back up the data file when prompted, taking care not to overwrite any existing backups.
