You can set your preferences to have Point of Sale automatically download updates, to be notified when an update is available and download it at your convenience, or to not be notified at all and manually check for updates yourself.
To set your update preferences:
  1. Select the Point of Sale Help menu and select Software Updates > Updater Preferences.
  2. Select one of the following options for update notification and download:
    • Download only. Let me choose when to install. (Recommended)
    • Notify me. Do not download.
    • Do not notify me. I will check for updates myself.
  3. Click OK.
To check for updates yourself:
  1. Select the Point of Sale Help menu and select Software Updates > Check for Updates.
  2. If an update is available, information about it displays.
  3. Click Update Now to download and install the update immediately, or Remind Me Later to delay the updates until a more convenient time.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the update.
  5. If applicable, install the update to other Point of Sale workstations.

Important: If you uninstall and then reinstall Point of Sale, you should check for and immediately install any available updates.

To manually install the update:
  1. Quit QuickBooks Point of Sale. If installing on multiple workstations, start with the Server Workstation.
  2. Locate the downloaded update file, and then double-click it. If you have difficulty finding the file on your computer, see "Find a file on a computer that is running Windows."
  3. In the InstallShield window, click Update and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.
  4. When the installation is complete, restart your computer.
  5. In QuickBooks Point of Sale, check the current program release:
    1. Select the Help menu and select About QB POS to open the Product Information window.
    2. The first line in this window displays QuickBooks Point of Sale 7.0 R5. (This means you have successfully installed the release.)
    3. Click OK to close the window.

    Important: If you have a server and client copies of Point of Sale 7.0, install the update on the server first, and then update the client computers before running the Point of Sale. Installing in a different order, or trying to run the program on the client without first updating the server computer, can cause errors.
