What is happening

The following error occurs when installing QuickBooks:

Error 1317. . An error occurred while creating directory [directory].
Why is this happening
This error can occur if there is a permissions issue with the directory.
How to fix the problem
Edit the permissions on the directory referenced in the error using one of the following methods:

  • Run the permissionsfix.bat utility
  • Manually edit the permissions

Run the permissionsfix.bat utility

A utility has been created that resets the System group and Everyone group permission settings back to Windows default settings. . For more information about this error, please see Microsoft support article 228658.

To run the utility, please follow these steps:

Important for Microsoft Windows Vista: Due to differences in file structures and permissions, the utility will not work on Windows Vista.

  1. Click on the link, PermissionsFix.bat
  2. Click Save, and save the file to the desktop of the affected system.
  3. Double-click the file, which will open a DOS window, and type Y at the prompt, Running this script will reset to the default settings the permissions of the affected folders. . Are you sure you want to continue? (Y/N)
  4. Once the file runs, select any key to exit the DOS window.
  5. Insert the QuickBooks 2007 CD and try the installation again.

Manually edit the permissions

Note: If you are using Windows XP Home Edition, the security tab may not be automatically available. . The computer will need to be restarted in Safe Mode to see the Security tab.

  1. In Windows Explorer, find the parent folder of your QuickBooks installation. . For example, QuickBooks defaults to C:\Program Files\Intuit as its install folder, so the parent folder would be C:\Program Files.
  2. Right-click the folder and select Properties.
  3. Click the Security tab and select the SYSTEM user located in the Group or user names section.
  4. Select the Allow checkbox for Full Control in the Permissions for SYSTEM section.
  5. Select the Everyone group located in the Group or user names section.
  6. Select the Allow checkbox for Full Control in the Permissions for Everyone section.
  7. Click the Advanced button to open the Advanced Security Settings window.
  8. Select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects. check box.
  9. Click Apply and click Yes to the Security prompt
  10. Click Apply and OK in the [folder name] Properties dialog box, where [folder name] is the name of the folder that you selected in step 1.
