Error 1406: "Could not write value '[2]' to key '[3]'"

What is happening

The following error occurs when installing the QuickBooks program or when updating QuickBooks payroll:

Error 1406: Could not write value "[2]" to key "[3]"
Why is this happening

This error can be caused a damaged Windows Installer component or by a Microsoft Windows registry key (noted in the error as [2]) denying access to the installer program.

How to fix the problem

If this error occurs while installing QuickBooks, download and install a new copy of Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.

If this error occurs while installing a payroll update, you must edit your permissions for the registry key listed in the error. . Due to the complex nature of registry issues, Intuit does not provide solution steps.

Detailed Instructions

To download and install Windows installer 3.1:

  1. Download the Windows Installer 3.1 installation package from the Microsoft support web site.
  2. Once the installation package has been downloaded, double-click the file and follow the directions to install Windows Installer 3.1.
  3. Once the installation has completed, install your QuickBooks program.

This error is also sometimes resolved by installing QuickBooks as a different user. . Please see the Microsoft Windows Help and Support Web site for details about adding a new user. . The new user should have Administrative rights to the local workstation where QuickBooks is being installed.

Note: If you were using an earlier version of QuickBooks before attempting the installation, you can continue to use your earlier version until you can successfully install the latest version.
