Starting or Running Windows in Safe Mode

Overview
Safe Mode loads Windows with the minimum number of drivers needed to function. . Prior to restarting in safe mode it is strongly urged that you know administrator passwords for your Windows installations.

Since this process will have you restarting your computer, please print out and read this article completely.

Below are Windows Version specific instructions for entering the Safe mode during the computer restart process. . Restart your computer once you have determined which steps apply to your version of Windows. . During the restarting process:
  • Windows 95
    When the message on your screen reads Starting Windows 95, press the F8 key several times. . At the menu, choose Safe Mode with Networking.
  • Windows 98
    Hold down the Shift key while the computer is restarting until the menu is displayed, and then choose Safe Mode with Networking.
  • Windows Me
    Hold down the Ctrl key while the computer is restarting until a menu is displayed, and then choose Safe Mode with Networking.
  • Windows 2000
    When the Starting Windows menu appears, press F8 several times. . When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode with Networking, and then press Enter.
  • Windows XP
    Repeatedly press F8 on your keyboard. . When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode with Networking, and then press Enter.
  • Windows Vista
    Repeatedly press F8 on your keyboard. . When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode with Networking, and then press Enter.

If you are still unable to restart in Safe Mode, try this alternate method:

  1. Insert a non-bootable (a new disk is fine) disk into Drive A:
  2. Click the Windows Start button and click Shut Down, and then select Restart.
  3. When you receive the "Invalid system disk" message, eject the disk from the A: drive.
  4. Push the F8 key twice. . Once for the "Press any key" requirement and again for the Microsoft menu.
  5. Click Safe Mode and press ENTER.
