Workarounds to make Point of Sale 5.0 or earlier versions run on Windows Vista

Overview
For the best possible experience, we highly recommend using Point of Sale 6.0 or later on Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Vista. . Point of Sale 5.0 and earlier versions were developed before Microsoft introduced the Windows Vista operating system, and therefore they will be adversely affected and may not install on Windows Vista.

If you choose to try to run Point of Sale 5.0 or earlier versions on Windows Vista, you must run the Point of Sale application as a Windows Administrator and in Windows XP-compatibility mode to help reduce the possibility of problems.* Even then, some features will be adversely affected and the software may not install. . For more information on Windows XP-Compatibility mode and Windows Administrator setup in Windows Vista, please see "Step 4: Run the application in compatibility mode" and "Step 5: Run the application as an administrator" on the Microsoft website at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927386/en-us.*

Not all configurations of Point of Sale 5.0 and earlier versions will install or launch, even when you are set up as a Windows Administrator and run Point of Sale in Windows XP Compatibility mode. . The software is affected differently, depending on whether you are using a new PC that already has Windows Vista installed or you upgrade the operating system of an existing PC to Windows Vista. . Additionally, the Point of Sale software will be affected differently depending on whether you are running a single installation of Point of Sale as a Server or multiple installations of Point of Sale on a network that has both a Server and Clients*. .

*When you are using multiple installations of Point of Sale on a network, one installation is the "Server" and all others are "Clients." If you are using just one installation of Point of Sale, it must be set up as the Server.

*Please note that this is an unsupported mode and Intuit does not recommend that you run QuickBooks Point of Sale 5.0 or earlier versions on Windows Vista. Individual users' experiences may vary, and users must proceed at their own risk. .
