General Information
QuickBooks is designed for local networks in which the computers are connected using a "hard" cable. . Networked performance can drop off significantly in long-distance networked environments, especially when encryption/decryption, such as with a virtual private network (VPN), is used.
Intermittent errors experienced when wireless connections fail for a few seconds can disconnect your QuickBooks session. . Similarly, connection errors in long-distance networking environment (for example, a modem interruption) can cause your QuickBooks session to disconnect.
Recommended Network Types
Other Network Types:
- Terminal Service Network: A network setup in which users run the QuickBooks program on a server computer using a "terminal session" on a remote computer.
Compatibility: A Terminal Service Network environment is only supported for QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions.
- Remote Area Network: A network that gives remote users access, using analog modems or Internet Subscriber Digital Network connections from the host computer's modem.
Compatibility: Not recommended. . QuickBooks is not designed to work with Remote Area Networks.
- Wide Area Network (WAN): A network in which computers are connected over long distances using telephone lines and satellite communications.
Compatibility: Not recommended. . QuickBooks is not designed to work with WANs.
- Virtual Private Network (VPN): A network in which computers are connected over long distances across the public Internet using an encrypted "tunnel".
Compatibility: Not recommended. . QuickBooks is not designed to work with VPNs.
- Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN): A network that allows devices that are in very close proximity to each other (approximately 10 meters) to access resources and exchange data, without the use of cables.
Compatibility: Not Recommended. . QuickBooks is not designed to work with WPANs.
- Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN, commonly referred to as "WiFi"): a network similar to a WPAN but that allows a larger coverage area (approximately 100 meters).
Compatibility: Not recommended. . QuickBooks is not designed to work with WLANs.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP): use to copy files from one location to another. . It is intended to move files and not open then.
Compatibility: Not recommended. . QuickBooks is not designed to work with FTPs.
