Determining your version of Microsoft Windows

This article describes how to determine the version of Microsoft Windows currently running on your computer.

Detailed Instructions

To determine your current version of Windows (common examples are Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2000), please follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows desktop, Right-click on the icon that represents your computer (this will be either your computer's name or My Computer).
  2. Select Properties from the drop-down arrow that appears and then select the General tab for Windows XP or 2000.
  3. Your current version of Windows will appear under the System heading (for Windows 2000 and Windows XP) or the Windows edition heading (for Windows Vista).
