Error 15212: The payroll and or QB update did not complete successfully

Error 15212: "The payroll update did not complete successfully. . Please try again." or "The QuickBooks update did not complete successfully."

What is happening

You may receive one of the following errors when updating payroll or QuickBooks:

  • Error 15212: The payroll update did not complete successfully. Please try again. . You must successfully download the update by the deadline displayed in the Get Updates window.
  • Error 15212: The QuickBooks update did not complete successfully.
Why is this happening

These errors can be caused by a shared download drive that is not mapped, is not accessible, or has insufficient access permissions.

How to fix the problem

This article provides the steps to enable you to receive an immediate update (a temporary measure), and the steps to resolve the issue permanently. . If you use the temporary measure, you will not be able to share the update with others.

Detailed Instructions
  1. To receive an immediate update:
    1. Follow the step below for your version of QuickBooks:
      • QuickBooks 2007 and 2006: Select the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks.
      • QuickBooks 2005: Select the File menu and select Update QuickBooks.
    2. Click the Options tab.
    3. Make a note of the exact path shown for the Download Location. . (If the path ends in "...,": move your mouse over the path. . A window will appear with the full path.)
    4. Click No for the Shared Download setting, click Save, and then click Close.
    5. Download the update again.

  2. For a permanent resolution to ensure that you can share future updates:
    1. Verify that the download location you noted in step 1.c is mapped.

      Note: Mapped drives always begin with a letter (for example, "E:\data\DownloadQB15"). . Unmapped drives begin with "\computer name" (for example, "\Joy Computer\data\DownloadQB15").     2. Use Windows Explorer to browse to the download location. . The mapped drives will be listed as "Data on [Name] Computer (E:)."
    3. Verify that you have sufficient access permissions by creating a new folder in the DownloadQB15 folder listed in the path.

      For example: If the path is "E:\data\DownloadQB15," open the DownloadQB15 folder, select New from the File menu, and then select Folder. . If you receive any permissions messages when creating this folder, contact your system administrator about editing your permissions.

    4. Download the update again.

If running Microsoft(R) Windows Vista and the error displays:

  1. In QuickBooks, press the F2 key to open Product Information.
  2. The Location should show C:\user\public\public documents\intuit\QuickBooks\Companyfiles\companyfile.qbw. . Close the Product Information window, and the company file.
  3. From the File menu, click Open or Restore Company, click Open a Company file radio button and click Next.
  4. Browse to the location listed above, and double click to manually reopen the company file even though it was showing in the correct location in the Product Information window.
  5. Re-download the tax tables now without error.
