Troubleshooting payroll updates

What do the error messages mean?

To get details about payroll update error messages:

  1. Go to QuickBooks support.

  2. In Search the Knowledge Base, choose your QuickBooks product.

  3. In "Enter search terms," type in "Troubleshooting payroll and QuickBooks update errors."

  4. Click "Troubleshooting payroll and QuickBooks update errors."

  5. On the page that opens, click "Payroll Update Errors."

Problems encountered while trying to get payroll updates are usually due either to an inactive (or nonexistent) payroll subscription or an incorrect Internet setup in QuickBooks.

If you know your Internet connection is working, follow these steps to identify the problem:

  1. Go to the Employees menu and click Get Payroll Updates.

    Click here if the option isn't available from the Employees menu. basic payroll^basic subscription, .

  2. Check the Subscription Status field and refer to the table below for more information on how to proceed.

    You have a current payroll service subscription.

    Make sure that your subscription number (which identifies you as a subscriber and entitles you to payroll updates) also appears in this window.

    No subscription number and...

    ...and you know you have subscribed.

    Call Intuit Payroll Services (see the Phone Directory for the number) to obtain your subscription number. basic payroll^basic subscription, . Proceed to step 3.

    No subscription number and...

    ...and you know you have not subscribed.

    Sign up for a payroll service.

    A subscription numberYou have a current payroll service subscription.Proceed to step 3.
    InactiveYour subscription has expired.Click Account Info and complete the information requested. basic payroll^basic subscription, . Be sure to update your billing information. basic payroll^basic subscription, . Then proceed to step 3.
    Not subscribedYou have not subscribed to the payroll service, and you are not entitled to receive payroll updates.Click Subscribe and complete the wizard. basic payroll^basic subscription, . Then proceed to step 3.
  3. Try downloading your payroll updates again. basic payroll^basic subscription, . If you are still not able to update, continue to step 4.

  4. Check your QuickBooks Internet connection setup:

    1. Go to the Help menu and click Internet Connection Setup.

    2. Select Use my computer's Internet connection settings, click Next, and then click Done.

    3. If the problems persist, try troubleshooting QuickBooks' connection to the Internet.

  5. Try downloading your payroll updates again. basic payroll^basic subscription, . If you continue to experience problems, call the payroll service (see the Phone Directory for the number) and ask them to send you your payroll updates on CD-ROM (a small shipping fee may apply).
