Setting Windows folder permissions

Setting Windows folder permissions

To work with a QuickBooks company file, you must have Windows permissions to the folder where the company file is located.

If you receive an error that you do not have sufficient permissions to the folder, ask your system administrator to make sure that the folder is shared on the network and to give all users permissions to change the files in the folder.

To set folder permissions

This procedure can be performed only by a user with administrator privileges to the computer where the company file is located.

  1. Right-click the folder where the company file is located and choose Properties.

  2. Select the Sharing tab and set the appropriate permissions.

For Windows 2003 Server or Windows XP:

    1. Select "Share this folder on the network."

    2. Select "Allow network users to change my files."

For Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000

    1. Select "Share this folder."

    2. Click the Permissions button.

    3. On the Share Permissions tab, make sure that the user or the user's group has permissions to access the folder.

    4. Select the checkboxes to allow the user or user's group to Change or Read files in the folder.

  3. If the folder is on a drive that is formatted for NTFS, click the Security tab and give the user or the user's group Read and Write permissions to the folder.

  4. Click the Apply button.
