ABS PDF Driver installation causes QuickBooks 2013 installation to hang

When installing QuickBooks 2013 or QuickBooks Enterprise 13.0, the install wizard shows "Installing ABS PDF driver...", but the installation appears to hang and does not complete.

Why this is happening

Since the release of the 2011 software, QuickBooks has utilized the Microsoft XPS driver to create all PDF’s from within QuickBooks.

However, applications within QuickBooks (Loan Manager, Cash Flow Projector and Business Planner) are unable to use the Microsoft XPS driver and require the additional installation of the Amyuni driver (ABS PDF Driver v400) to function properly.

How to fix it

Cancel the installation of QuickBooks, and perform the following:

  • Note: Although it appears that QuickBooks has not completed the installation, the point at which the install hangs is after the QuickBooks software has been successfully installed by the wizard.

If you performed the installation of QuickBooks 2013 from a CD:

  1. Right-click on your CD/DVD drive and select Explore.
  2. Click on the Third Party folder.
  3. Click on the ABS folder.
  4. Double-click the file named abspdf412setup.exe to launch the stand-alone installer for the ABS PDF Driver v400.
  5. Follow the installation wizard prompts to successfully complete the driver installation.
  6. You will now see that the ABS PDF Driver v400 is listed under your installed printers, and QuickBooks will open and operate as expected.

If you performed the installation of QuickBooks 2013 from a downloaded file:

  1. Open the Windows temp folder:
    1. On your keyboard, press Windows + R to open the Run window.
    2. Type: %temp% then click OK.
    3. The QuickBooks temporary installation files are stored in folders titled Pro, Premier or Enterprise.
      • Note: Following the file path that matches your Operating System version to access the temp folder manually:
        • Windows Vista, 7, 8: C:\Users\[current user logged on]\AppData\Local\Temp
        • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[current user logged on]\Local Settings\Temp
  1. In the temp folder, locate and open the folder that matches the version of  QuickBooks you downloaded and:
    1. Click on the Third Party folder.
    2. Click on the ABS folder.
    3. Double-click the file named abspdf412setup.exe to launch the stand-alone installer for the ABS PDF Driver v400.
    4. Follow the installation wizard prompts to successfully complete the driver installation.
    5. You will now see that the ABS PDF Driver v400 is listed under your installed printers, and QuickBooks will open and operate as expected.
