Error LVL_ERROR: Unable to open the file...returned Error Code 13, in QBBackup.log when you back up

You may see an error when you try to create a backup:

QuickBooks cannot backup

In the QBBackup.log file you see the following error:

LVL_ERROR--Unable to open the file :\\filename.qbw> , fopen() returned Error Code 13

How to fix it

Intuit recommends 2 solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try both to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Close and reopen QuickBooks

  1. From the QuickBooks File menu, choose Close Company Log Off.
  2. From the File menu, choose Exit to close QuickBooks.
  3. Reopen QuickBooks and try your backup again.

If you still see the problem, try the next solution.

Solution 2: Restart your computer and reopen QuickBooks

  1. From the QuickBooks File menu, choose Close Company Log Off.
  2. From the File menu, choose Exit to close QuickBooks.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Reopen QuickBooks and try your backup again.
