Error -6150 , -1006 or Error 80070057

When double-clicking on a working file, backup, portable company file, or a file with an extension other than .qbw, you may see one of the following errors:

An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to create, open, or use the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Intuit Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes: (-6150,-1006).

There was an unexpected error reported while trying to run QuickBooks with company file "path location". Error code 80070057.

Note: More than one error message that includes the error code 80070057 exists. If this is not the exact wording of your error message please refer to Error: 80070057 the parameter is incorrect" and "You do not have sufficient permissions to delete files...

Why this is happening

 

There are 4 possible causes for these error messages:

  1. QuickBooks cannot read the company file because the company file extension was changed.

    • A QuickBooks for Mac backup file was manually  renamed with a .QBB file extension.

    • A QuickBooks for Windows file extension has manually renamed or is the wrong type (.qbm, .qbb, .qbx).

  2. QuickBooks detects data damage in the company file during conversion or creation of a backup or portable company file.

  3.  QuickBooks installation is damaged.

  4. Attempting to open a portable company file (.qbm) without having QuickBooks open.

  5. Working in a company file located on a USB (Flash) drive.

If you cannot open QuickBooks refer to the document QuickBooks or the company file does not open

 

How to fix it

Intuit recommends several solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: If you are converting from Mac to Windows

To resolve this error, use the Back Up to QuickBooks for Windows function in QuickBooks for Mac when converting to QuickBooks for Windows.

Solution 2: Verify file extensions

  1. Verify the company name file extension

    1. Right-click the company file.
    2. Choose Properties.
    3. Click the QuickBooks tab
    4. Note the file extension in the Filename field.
    5. Note  the QuickBooks version in the Last opened with field 
    6. Click OK.
  2. Copy the company name file and change the extension

    1. Create a folder.
    2. Right-click the company file and select Copy.
    3. Right-click on the  new folder and select Paste.
    4. Click here to be sure the complete file extension is showing.  
    5. Right-click the copy and click Rename.
    6. Change the extension to .qbm.
    7. Click anywhere to save the changes. 
    8. Open QuickBooks and Restore the Portable.
    9. If the file does not open Rename the file extension to .qbb.
    10. Open QuickBooks and Restore the Backup.
    11. If the file does not open Rename the file extension to .qbx.
    12. Open QuickBooks and Convert to an Accountants Copy.
  3. Copy the company name file from the Flash drive and paste in a local folder

    1. With QuickBooks closed right-click Windows Start button and click Open Windows Explore.
    2. Click "C:\" then on the "file" side of the window, right-click and select New > Folder.
    3. Name the new folder something like "aQBrestore" then click off the file name to save the new named folder.
    4. Browse to the Flash drive, right-click the "company file.qbw" file and select Copy.
    5. Browse to the new folder "aQBrestore", double-click to open then right-click and select Paste.
    6. Open QuickBooks then click File, Open or Restore, browse to folder "aQBrestore", click the company file name and click Open.
Solution 3: If your converting from a previous version of QuickBooks

If the error occurred during a conversion from a prior version of QuickBooks, restore the backup that was created during the conversion process into the prior version of QuickBooks.

Note: If all computers in a multi-user configuration report the error, do not Repair or Uninstall and Reinstall QuickBooks. The issue is most likely data related, not program related.

Solution 4: Restore a portable company file or backup file

  1. Start QuickBooks.
  2. Select the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  3. Select the Restore a portable company file or Restore a Backup and click Next.
  4. Browse to and select the portable company file or backup you want to open, and then click Open.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select the location where you want to save the restored QuickBooks company file then click Save.

    Note: Intuit suggests you save the restored file to a local drive, and then copy it to the preferred location after you have successfully restored the data.

  7. If the Restore a portable company file opens successfully, congratulations you are done. If not, move to the next step.
  8. If the Restore a backup file opens successfully, congratulations you are done. If not, move to the next step

Solution 5: If you have one, convert an Accountant's Copy to a regular company file

Solution 6: Repair the QuickBooks installation

Solution 7: Uninstall and Reinstall QuickBooks by performing a clean install of QuickBooks
