Error: AutoBackupEXE MFC Application has encountered a problem..., when closing QuickBooks Desktop

When closing a company file or exiting QuickBooks Desktop, the Automatic Backup process begins but immediately fails with the following error:

Error: AutoBackupEXE MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

After installing a later version of QuickBooks, scheduled Backups in earlier versions of QuickBooks Desktop may cause this error.
